Asian Bridal Makeup: Made for You
Your features aren't a template. Your bridal makeup shouldn't be either.
If you’re an Asian bride looking for a makeup artist for your wedding in the Netherlands, you may have a very specific concern.
Not simply:
“Will my makeup look beautiful?”
But:
“Will she understand my features?”
Perhaps you’ve had makeup done before where your eye makeup seemed to disappear as soon as you opened your eyes. Maybe finding the right foundation shade has been difficult. Or perhaps you’ve saved beautiful bridal makeup inspiration online, only to realise that the same look doesn’t quite work on your own face.
Those concerns are completely understandable.
And they are exactly why I don’t believe in applying one standard Asian bridal makeup look to every bride.
There isn't one “Asian look”
Asian brides have wonderfully diverse features, skin tones, undertones and face shapes.
You might have monolids, hooded eyes, a visible crease or something in between. Your skin may be fair, medium, tan or deep, with warm, cool or neutral undertones.
And your personal style matters just as much.
Perhaps you want fresh, luminous skin and softly defined eyes. Maybe you love a more glamorous look. Or perhaps you want something in between.
Your heritage doesn’t decide what your bridal makeup should look like.
You do.
Eye makeup needs to work when your eyes are open
This is especially important when creating bridal eye makeup.
A technique that looks beautiful on one eye shape may disappear completely on another.
With monolids or hooded eyes, for example, the placement of eyeshadow, eyeliner and lashes can make a big difference to the finished look.
I pay attention to how your eyes naturally look when you’re relaxed and looking straight ahead — not just how the makeup looks with your eyes closed.
Because most of your guests will see your eyes open.
And so will you in your photographs.
The goal isn’t to make your eyes look like somebody else’s.
It’s to make your own eyes look beautifully defined and balanced.
Finding your skin tone and undertone
Foundation is another important part of creating natural-looking Asian bridal makeup.
The wrong undertone can make a complexion appear too yellow, too pink or slightly grey, even when the shade itself seems close.
Rather than trying to fit you into a standard foundation colour, I look at your individual skin tone and undertone and choose accordingly.
And natural makeup doesn’t require your entire face to have the same level of coverage.
Sometimes allowing a little of your natural skin to show through is what makes the final result look fresh and believable.
You don't have to look traditionally bridal
Perhaps you’ve seen Asian bridal makeup online that is very glamorous, heavily contoured or strongly defined.
If you love that, that’s wonderful.
But perhaps you don’t.
Maybe you normally prefer soft makeup and want your wedding look to feel elegant, fresh and recognisably you.
You don’t have to choose a particular style because you’re an Asian bride.
Your makeup can reflect your personality, your wedding dress, your hairstyle, your ceremony and the overall atmosphere you’re creating.
International and multicultural weddings
I particularly enjoy working with brides whose weddings bring different cultures, traditions and personal styles together.
You might be getting married in the Netherlands while your family travels from different parts of the world. You might be combining traditional and modern elements, or planning your wedding from another country.
Being able to communicate comfortably matters too.
If you’re an English-speaking bride, you should be able to explain what you like, what you don’t like and what you’re worried about without anything getting lost in translation.
Your consultation should start with listening.
Your face isn't a category
I think this is the most important part of Asian bridal makeup:
There is no single Asian face.
There is only your face.
Your eye shape, your skin, your features, your personal style and the way you want to feel when you walk into the room.
That’s what I want to work with.
Not to transform you into somebody else, but to create makeup that makes you feel beautiful, confident and completely yourself on one of the most photographed days of your life.
